Task Force Charge
The following summary of the Preserve and Share Tennessee History and Culture Task Force charge is taken from the Tennessee Electronic Library Phase II Development Plan.
TEL Phase II seeks to provide an infrastructure for the creation of and access to digital resources on Tennessee history and culture. The infrastructure for the creation of and access to digital resources on Tennessee history and culture has five components, as detailed below. The first phase of activities will focus on the development and implementation of a portal to provide coordinated, centralized access to contextual information and existing electronic resources on Tennessee history and culture. The second phase of activities will focus on efforts to expand the electronic content of the portal through the creation of new digital resources.
- Creation of a Portal
The portal will provide not only a tool for accessing a variety of digital resources, but also a structure for organization, a library of conversion standards, and a dynamic educational and public relations tool. - A Statewide Inventory
A statewide inventory of relevant institutions will enable TEL Phase II committees to identify existing digital resources on Tennessee history and culture. The inventory can serve the immediate purpose of identifying items to which links should be provided in the portal. It can also collect information about standards used in conversion, long-term preservation and storage plans for digital resources, the availability of contextual information, and plans or priorities for future digital conversion activity. - Developing Standards
The definition and promulgation of standards for digital conversion and cataloging. - Prioritizing Collection Development Practices
Once existing digital resources are identified, it will be possible to create a collection development plan for the Tennessee history and culture portion of TEL Phase II. The plan should take into account what already exists, the priorities of local libraries, and the needs of specific user communities, such as the K-12 student and teacher communities.
